Employees evacuated after suspicious substance found

An employee of Zondervan Publishing has been taken to the hospital after a suspicious dark powder was found in a package at their building Monday.

Few details are available at this time but Newschannel 3 has learned that the building has been evacuated by all 400 employees of Zondervan along with 150 employees of Family Christian Stores, which shares the building. The employees have been sent home for the day.

One person was sent to Spectrum Butterworth Campus for evaluation and another was treated and released at the scene.

The Kentwood Fire Department, Grand Rapids Hazmat and Tri-Community Hazmat are on the scene now.

Zondervan Publishing sells bibles, books and other Christian products.
